Is there a way to do the same without using Adobe Pro? Are there any free tools that can do it?

There are some alternatives including Small PDF but I haven’t fully tested those out. I pay for Adobe Pro on a monthly basis so I get all the updates as well, if you can manage that it might be worth looking into if you are going to do lots of journals with high resolution images.
Thank you, Sue! I will definitely invest in Adobe Pro as soon as I can. In the meantime, I’ve found a free tool that does optimisation – https://pdfresizer.com. The only thing is – it converts the transparent background in the images that I insert into a page to black. It doesn’t happen when I use it as a background – only when I use it as a picture. Do you know why it could be happening? It doesn’t happen in PowerPoint or when I export it to PDF – only when I try to optimise the PDF file.
The black background is to do with the actual image, it might be better in that instance to use a JPG version instead. Might be a setting in the PDF file itself.
